Everybody loves to have holidays am I right? But sometimes it can get pretty mess up if things doesn't show up as plan.Same goes to a working holiday. So I'm here to guide you on a road to awesomeness while not getting your shit stuck in the toilet.Note that this is for Malaysian's.I do not know the rest. Allright before that, let me share with you my experience on arrival.Upon arriving Auckland, filled up the arrival card,(was sleeping on my flight so I did it there)got my passport checked, answer simple questions by immigration officers and done!Even my documents proving I had enough funds was nothing.Maybe I look like a nerd guy who just came here for pure travelling.:)And then there's the custom clearance where you need to declare items for security purpose.Refer HERE for more information.I pass that with a breeze and that's it!Welcome to NZ. 1)Should I get my documents printed?Obviously! There are some people who think its not a big deal.It is dammit! You don't wanna spend money and time doing things that is needed in the first place. So here is my list of documents to get it printed: Working Holiday Visa x3 Passports x3 Driving license x2 Resume x2(optional) Proof of funds(bank drafts or cheques etc..)x1 and remember to save the documents in your email for emergency purposes. If you don't have a working holiday visa,I have written a POST on applying it. 2)Bank Accounts(ANZ) This should be sorted out once you have settled down in your hostel or a "permanent" accomodation.Remember to buy a SIM CARD too before heading the bank.I was told that ANZ is the common bank to open so hence I decided with it.In order to get your bank account open, they will need a copy of: Passport x1 A permanent residential address x1 Working Holiday Visa x1 A permanent residential address is a document that can be obtain if you are staying in hostels or house "permanently".Most hostels and landlords will provide a letter of approval to open your bank account in New Zealand. While some of this accomodations do need you to stay for at least a week or more, try find hostels that provide you within 1day.Ponsonby backpackers in Auckland told me its possible. So after the bank has gotten the proper documents, you have th option to choose either a Debit card or a bank card.Choosing the debit card will be better in terms of convenience. The procedure is easy and its done in 1 day.By the way ,some banks in the city or central area needs appointment to open the bank accounts because of the large crowd so try going to the suburbs that is less crowded and its instant. 3)IRD TAX NUMBER This is the most troublesome part because of the wait.In order to get your IRD number you will need to have a bank account first. No bank account no IRD,simple as that.It is mandatory to get the tax number for work purpose to be taxed. So after getting your bank account done, make any forms of TRANSACTION with your card and get your bank statement the next day.You will need that statement to get the IRD number.Application forms for the IRD is available in post office or go to their website, fill up the form and print it.I heard you can get your IRD before arriving in NZ but it's kind of a hassle.I'll let you do the research. And again you will need:
A permanent residental address x1 Copy of your passport x1 Bank statement x1 Working Holiday Visa x1 Now everything is at place, all you gotta do is wait.(plan your itinerary and stuff)It takes approximately around 5-14 working days to be delivered to your residential address. You can opt for collection at the post office too.If it's not delivered yet but you had received through email. Its done! You don't need to wait for the letter as long as the email states your IRD,you're good to go.If you want to get it fast, tell the staff(post office)that its urgent and create some excuse saying you're leaving the city because of a job interview or something.I got mine after 5 working days.:) TIPS:Now,if you want super fast and "instant".Go to an AA outlet and register your IRD there. On your form mark URGENT and pay $10 for the fee.You will get it within 1 or 2 days. 4)Getting A Job Finding a job is easy, but getting it isn't.Some seasons can be difficult to get a job especially winter and mainly for agriculture. So usually jobs are much easier to get in Spring(Sept-Nov)Summer(Dec-Feb)Autumn(March-May)Farm and orchard jobs are the popular ones as people want to experience the countryside. And you benefit it for the visa extention too!Besides agricultural jobs, there are other industries you can venture into like Fnb,manufacturing and so on.I'll provide some links below for jobs that you can look into.
5)Get a car Transportation in New Zealand is not convenient and usually the best way to travel around is by car. There's no other reason for you to take public transportation unless you're into travellling solo or you don't own a driving license.(you don't have a choice and its not gonna be flexible for your time too) Used cars here are pretty cheap too costing around $1k+ for a normal car,$2-$3k for a station wagon or van and $$4-5k for a campervan. In my opinion, station wagon suits me the most for its price, convenient and spacious as I can sleep in the car(2 pax) without spending money staying at hostel and such. Its also the best way to travel from time to time without the hassle. Most people tend to have a travelmate and share things out within the budget. If you're into solo travelling, its possible but its more expensive to travel solo in New Zealand than in other countries so be prepare to burn your wallet. So the conclusion is get a car with your travelmate and plan things out.Its gonna be hell of fun and you get to meet other people which majority of people is doing. 6)BE ACTIVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND APPS In the current world we live in,everthing we do now revolves around techology and we need to keep things up to date even for travelling.I used to take those paper maps and and a compass for my travelling but who needs that now?Don't get me wrong, its indeed useful but only when all of your gadget runs out of juice.Ok back to the topic. In New Zealand,we want to travel as much as possible with less problems to face and enjoy what the country gives. So here are some of the apps and links I think is useful when travelling in New Zealand.(Pink=app Blue=links)
That's it guys!Think that sums up most of the things that most people would do.If you have any questions feel free to ask.I'm gonna write about the top places to travel in the north island so stay tune!
