PENANG, a place where everyone needs to go once in a lifetime and its a place to get fat too!(I'm Not!)While Penang is mostly known for its local specialty food, there are few number of places that only Penangite knows to eat and fully enjoy it to themselves.Today I'm gonna show you some of my favourite places to eat where you can hardly find any tourist.I have been working in Singapore for 10 years and rarely I come back to my hometown but whenever I'm back, the usual spot still remains the same. The taste, texture and smell!Ahh..reminisce the past when I was young when my parents took me some of this places.Without further ado, lets foodporn it!! 1) PERAK LANE FISH HEAD(GROUPER) NOODLE SOUP Run by the 3rd generation of Chien's family, this has gotta be one of the best fish noodles soup in Perak Lane Road.Operating for more than 60 years, this place has bring good memories to people especially old folks living in Penang. The essense of the soup has a rich flavour of fish stock, garlics and vegetables that simmers for hours in a pot on charcoal.Everything they do here is mostly done manually and still maintaining the traditional taste.Best part of this soup is the fish slices. While majority now of fish noodles shops serves dory or batang, you wil get grouper slices and choices like snapper, prawns, crab, pork liver and other seafoods are available for selection with your noodles.I'm not a fish head person so usually I choose slices most of the time.If you have the $$$,try their crab porridge, was said to be their best porridge in town too. Location wise is not really convenient because its near the road but they do have ample parking spaces. There is a good asam curry fish head opposite of it if you're still not contented with your meal.:)
2) DEEN MAJU NASI KANDAR(JALAN GURDWARA) Everyone knows that Nasi Kandar is one of the top foods in Penang but which shop will have the best in terms of quality, taste, and affordable?I personally think its Deen Maju.Whenever I come here, the quality has never been compromised. The consistency in their food comes with a thing, the queue. They have been proven to be one of the best nasi kandar's shop in Penang no doubt.I'll let the picture do the talking.
3)FRIED ASAM LAKSA(YAN YAN CAFE) Most of you guys know there's not a dish that's been invented in this way because the usual asam laksa has broth on it...I went to try this version of fried laksa that was invented by a young chef in his late 20's,he does a good job intepreting this dish as close as to the original.Everything was perfectly executed in my opinion and the best part of it?Definitely the taste..I just couldn't figure out how does he replicate the taste to be exact. At first,it feels weird thinking that a fried version goes well with the noodles but it isnt weird after you ate it.Anyway, this dish reminds me that creativity can make a fresh perspective in any form of things. The place and food is relatively new and I consider this food to be quite interesting and delicious thanks to Mr Vess Ooi creativity. No doubt it needs time to grow to the people's taste,it will definitely win the hearts of the locals from what I feel.Location is quite centralize if you're coming by car but parking is quite a hassle. Alternatively if you dont mind walking, you can just walk down from GAMA supermarket that is a 15 mins walk.
4)MEE GORENG(BATU LANCHANG MARKET) You can find Mee goreng almost anywhere in Penang ,but a good mee goreng? To me,its located in Batu Lanchang market where most of the good hawker foods are there. This stall has been around for at least 2 generation and has taken over by his daugther now.The taste has a tangy salty sweet feel towards its noodles and the peanuts just compliments . There are many other food stalls here too that has good local penang food and look for the nyonya kuih's there.Give them a try if you think you havent had enough of it.Allthough its out of the way for tourist for its location but majority of Uber and Grab drivers knows this place..(dont really reccomend taxi because they SUX!)
5) ARK TUI MEE SUAH(HERBAL DUCK DRUMSTICK SOUP NOODLES) This is one of a unique dish in Penang people tend to forget. Not many states in Malaysia sell this though as it needs time to bring out the flavour of the broth.Fortunately,I manage to find one stall is been here for quite a number of years and its my dad's favourite.(and now me!)For tourist coming here, you do need transportation and is a 10 mins drive from KOMTAR. Besides this stall, there are other hawker stall too but to me its just average.(maybe penang has too many good food lol)Usually its the duck that attracts people and they have license to operate this hor..*winks.:)
6) NASI MELAYU LIDIANA Still recalling when's the last time I ate Malay economy rice and unfortunately its like remembering what I ate on my birthday 15 years ago.In Penang,we love our rice!!especially drowning it with curries and sauces. So recently I went to a very famous malay stall in Tanjung Bungah where it serves authentic Malay economy rice.Everyday it serves to the crowd of locals who flock here for their authentic malay rice.Dish ranges from meat to seafood is widely available here for lunch. If you happen to be nearby here, give it a try.
7) SIMPAT AMPAT YAM RICE Do you know that Yam rice is one of the less known food to be found in Penang?Although its considered as a Malaysian dish, there is still many Penangites love this unique dish.I have found this shop to be quite true to its authentic taste and this shop usually solds out his yam rice by 1.30pm.Usually yam rice is accompanied by salted vege soup and vinegared pork leg and find all his dishes to be as close as what my mom cook in the past.
8)SUNGAI PINANG FOOD COURT And here comes my fav place!!This is where in my opinion you can get best of all varieties from appetizer to deserts.A wide range of Penang specialty and foreign cuisine.Although this place its out of the town,it is still accesible by Rapid bus 303, 307 and 401E from the city. After a hearty meal, you can just head down to Karpal Singh Drive and enjoy the sea breeze with a view. Its also one of the hangout for youngsters and the the totally hype PokemonGo(cuz there's Pokestops)Ok,Getting back on food, one of the food to consider eating there is the Ikan Bakar, braised pork in vinegared, fried rice, hand pound peanut cookies. and much more.Personally tried and it seems its up to my standard.I dont personally reccomend food along Karpal Singh Drive unless you're into restaurants and food chains.
I was too busy eating and entertaining friends that I forgot to take pictures..Dammit! but rest assured there is alot of food that will make you feel undecisive.Just go with the flow if you cant decide..:)
